By Nancy E. Schwartz I recently spoke with three nonprofit communicator colleagues and four graphic designers who outlined this three-fold path to a process that'll ensure high-impact design for your nonprofit. Before you even get to the design process itself, remember to follow these five pre-design steps to effective graphic design, from finding the right designers to crafting a creative brief. Here's what your colleagues advise: Be clear, comprehensive and realistic Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Director of Communications Kitty McCullough swears by this maxim. She advises nonprofit communicators to "sketch out as much as you can at the beginning (back to the creative brief) and ask for preliminary sketches so your designer doesn't spend time working up something far from what you want." Mark Dessauer, communications officer at Active Living By Design, solicits three to five design concepts from his graphic designers. "And I ask for completely distinct takes on the project, not variations on a single theme," says Mark. "This lets me expand the discussion to go beyond my pre-conceived ideas, and pushes my designers to be their most creative." Editorial Comment: Great idea Mark, but you'll pay for it. Advice - specify how many design concepts you want in the creative brief to avoid surprises. Jack Sherin, former agency creative exec and now freelance designer to a range of nonprofit clients, suggests that you be "entirely confident in all details of your design needs and process, before getting started." BTW, Jack presents a single design concept if it seems right on target. Practices are indeed designer- specific. Most importantly, think through your concepts and goals before saying a word to your graphic designers. "For us, the essence of an effective partnership is understanding that the designer's job is to provide graphic interpretations of OUR thinking. We define the concepts we want to convey, how the new design links with existing design elements, etc.," comments Julia Graham Lear, director of the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools. "If we don't take time to do so, the final product will reflect the designer's 'take' on the project, not ours." Designer Sybil Rogers swears by the creative brief, which "enables us designers to create designs that are visually relevant and strategically on target." Here are my guidelines for creating a creative brief that works. Build a solid, candid, ongoing relationship with your graphic designers Nothing is more important than building and maintaining these relationships, even when no design project is pending. Build those partnerships and keep them going, so that your designers keep you, and your organization's design profile, top of mind. Lenore Neier, VP of Marketing and Communications at the American Liver Foundation(ALF), makes sure she develops and maintains close working relationship with favorite designers. "It seems to be the only way that works," she says. "They have to get to know your organization intimately to give you the right design product." Lenore speaks with ALF's graphic and web designers on an ongoing basis. "That way they stay current with our focus and news, and are ready to jump in when we need them," she says. Don't forget that strong relationships are built on honesty - diplomatic honesty that is. Mark Dessauer recommends that you be "completely honest about how you feel about the work, especially if a designer is a friend (which frequently happens, even if that isn't the case at the beginning). If you aren't happy, you'll be saddled with a design product that doesn't meet your expectations or needs. The results will suffer, and your relationship will too," he advises. Jack Sherin suggests that you take it one step further to educate your designers on your nonprofit's internal approval process, so they understand what it'll take to build consensus around design decisions. Don't try to be the graphic designer This is a hard one, as all of us think we have a great aesthetic sense, and want to apply it to our brochures and email templates as we do in our living rooms and gardens. Stop! Graphic designer Barbara Wertheim, who works with nonprofit clients as diverse as the Seeing Eye and the New Jersey Hall of Fame, advises, "Make sure you hire a competent professional designer with a proven track record -- and then trust her to do her job. Make changes to the design when they're based in a sound rationale, but resist tinkering with the design -- as you risk throwing off a deliberate and delicate visual balance." Kitty Griffith, an expert communicator who has led initiatives at organizations as diverse as Citibank and NYRAG, takes this one step further. "Don't tell the graphic artist how to do her art - she's the pro; you're not," she says. "Do convey any design modifications you have. But remember that a good designer will advise against changes that will weaken the design (for example, using green ink for type, which is notoriously hard to read). Don't force the issue - the designer knows best." Thanks to my friends and colleagues for your great recommendations. When you follow these steps, I guarantee you'll get better design results for your nonprofit. Nancy E. Schwartz helps nonprofits succeed through effective marketing and communications. 100 Free Online Dating Services
By Keith Londrie Create a great autobiography at your courting website and the first email that you send to another member will be an absolute stunner. Internet meeting has become a norm, and is gaining in acceptability. Seems like everywhere we surf on the Internet nowadays we run across this little advertisement: 'Free internet personals'. The dating web sites are abundant and flourishing. It's no wonder, people do not have to commit to a date until they are ready. Then they can ask the best prospects for a date and even something further. The development of the Online world and the Web has transformed our planet into a digitalized global village. Online courting is simply a free dating service that you use via the internet. If you are looking for a date, but are a bit skeptical about using an online dating service, give it a try. As I stated above, you can search for as long as you would like without committing to a date or meeting with another person. Some dating web sites just ask for very basic buzz before attempting to match you to a potential collaborator. By using an internet courting service, you dont have to wait until the weekend to meet someone. You can easily have more fun with a woman when all of the pressure is off. Communicating through the internet gives you some sort of identity protection, until you are more comfortable with the prospective date to go to the next level. Using an internet dating service to find dates was once frowned upon and even considered scary. There are many internet courting sites that have very short sign-up processes and others that require you to answer lots of questions. Internet dating is not all fun and games and there are a lot of things that a person has to know about online courting before one gets into the intricacies of it. Take your time and meet different people online and slowly find the match that you are looking for. The traditional argument for not using the internet to meet someone is that it is not natural. Whether you find your date on the internet or in person, you could end up with a true loved one or a broken heart. Online courting is now a huge industry. If an online dater sends you threatening e-mails or makes you feel uncomfortable, you can simply report them to the online dating service and have their account revoked Keith Londrie II is a successful Webmaster and publisher of how-to-date-woman.info A website that specializes in providing advice on how to date women online that you can research on the internet in your pajamas from the comfort of your own home. Bad Credit Unsecured Personal Loans
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marcus_Peterson]Marcus Peterson Anybody can have a poor credit history, perhaps due to missed payments on a previous loan. If you have a bad credit history, you will find it difficult to secure another loan. However, these days, lenders have come to realize that having bad credit does not mean that the person is totally incapable to pay any loan. So, they have developed a wide range of bad credit unsecured personal loans. Bad credit unsecured personal loans are loans given to people with a bad credit history. Even if you have bad credit, you can receive an unsecured personal loan to pay other debts, or perhaps to have your home renovated and pay other necessary expenses. Since a lot of people who have credit problems request these loans, interest rates become more competitive as well. You may wonder how come these lenders allow you to secure a bad credit, unsecured, personal loan in spite of your bad credit history. Well, basically, they allow you to have a loan, but you are required to place some item or property in the lenders trust as collateral. In an unsecured, personal loan, there is usually no need for collateral, but with bad credit you must provide collateral so that it can be repossessed in case you fail to repay the loan. So, where can you find lenders who are willing to give you the loan? You can try some finance companies and lenders that are willing to take the risk. If not, you can go online and check for bad credit unsecured personal loan providers. Just be cautious and pick the one that offers the best terms because you do not want your collateral to be forfeited if you cannot abide by the terms. Is Your Child Bipolar?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Terry_Coyier]Terry Coyier Many parents face life with a difficult to raise child. If temper tantrums, crying fits, severe opposition and sometimes even extreme giddiness are part of your daily or even weekly routine, then you'll want to read this. Early onset bipolar disorder is quite unlike adult bipolar disorder. It manifests differently in children and often disguises itself as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It is difficult to diagnosis, but armed with the right information, a good psychiatrist can identify it and treat it. Symptoms (may include): irritable moodagitationimpulsivity (lack of control)destructive ragesdefiance of authority (especially when no is used)separation anxietyextreme sadnesscrying spellssleeping too much or too littlelack of interest in activitiesrapidly changing moods (from sadness to elation)hyperactivitypressured or racing speechbed wettingnight terrorsinappropriate sexual behaviorexcessive craving of sweets What Parents Need to Do: Keep a daily log of your child's moods (mood charts can be found online)Keep a record of unusual behaviors (anything that fits into one of the categories above)Keep a sleep diary (a record of how many hours your child sleeps each night)Write down anything your child says that may seem out of the ordinary (especially things about death or not wanting to live)Write down a family history of anyone who has had a mood disorders or experienced alcoholism Whether or not you have a history of mood disorders in your family, if your child is experiencing most or all of the symptoms above, it's imperative that you have them evaluated by a qualified doctor. Often the family physician isn't familiar with the intricacies of mental disorders and should refer you to a child psychiatrist who specializes in mood disorders. Early prevention is the best treatment and can make life for you and your child so much easier. If your doctor wants to treat your child for ADHD, make sure they rule out bipolar disorder FIRST! Being treated with stimulants can exacerbate bipolar disorder, making it even more difficult to treat down the road. Treatment of Bipolar Disorder The first line of defense with bipolar disorder is the mood stabilizer. Since bipolar is a chemical imbalance in the brain, the mood stabilizer attempts to fix the imbalance. Several different mood stabilizers are available and your doctor will prescribe the one they feel is right for your child, based upon the symptoms you describe. This is why it is important to keep accurate records of your child's behaviors. Be aware, mood stabilizers can take up to six weeks to be affective. By that time you should have had a follow-up visit or even two and can discuss the need to change medications if necessary. Bipolar medication is trial and error so be patient. Therapy is also important to the bipolar child. Finding a child psychologist is sometimes difficult, but can make a big difference to your child. Therapy teaches them how to cope with their disorder and can teach them skills they can use when an episode erupts. They can also be very helpful to the parents, teaching them how to cope with their bipolar child. Early intervention cannot be stressed enough. The sooner your child is evaluated, the sooner they can be diagnosed and become stable. If you doubt your child's diagnosis, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion. The best case scenario is that you have misread your child's behavior and the doctor will tell you that the behavior your child exhibits is normal. The worst case scenario is that your child does have bipolar disorder. Remember though, bipolar is treatable and is not the end of the world, especially if caught early. Terry J. Coyier is a 37-year-old college student studying for an Associates of Applied Sciences degree. She is also a freelance writer who writes about bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. Is Seminar Marketing Overdone?
By Kathran Martin Dont believe the scuttle butt. Presented well and to the right audience with the right follow-up systems; seminars are still an extremely effective marketing tool for financial advisors. The problem is that many advisors arent paying attention to these details. Are there advisors using seminars effectively? Yes! In fact, some of the very top advisor coaches are convincing their clients to focus more on seminar marketing in these turbulent times and these advisors are reaping large harvests from their efforts. Why use seminar marketing? Begin with the end in mind, says Steven Covey. In this case, we want to collect a group of highly-motivated, high-value clients from our seminar marketing. We want the return on investment (ROI) to be extremely attractive. We want these to run like clock work. We want our seminars to consume the least amount of our time. Does that about sum it up? The primary objective of seminars is to generate a lot of new business, not to get compliments on your teaching ability, humorous stories or the quality of the meal you serve. There are several links in this chain: we need to make sure that the audience has the potential to meet our expectation, we need to close for appointments with 50% of the attendees and we need to convert those appointments into business. How do you get a target audience? What is your target audience? A target audience is one where the audiences needs and concerns are aligned with your value proposition and service offering. For example, if your ideal client is the active, affluent senior living in Temecula California then dont expect good results from a seminar that appeals to Baby Boomers with education funding concerns. In the seminar business there are two ways to qualify attendees: first is with the right mailing list and the second is through the invitations copy. The right list means using a vendor with a large enough database of households and data points about those households to match your target audience. If your target audience is affluent seniors, then you really dont have a targeted audience. Thats simply too broad. But if your target audience were retired boat owners in the state of Texas who were married, owned their homes and were over age 62, then you would be getting closer to a target audience. How do you qualify with copy? You want certain characteristics in your audience. For instance, you might be focusing on the IRA rollover market among retirees who own their homes in central Arkansas. When you write the copy you insert phrases like, You must attend this seminar if you are planning an IRA rollover in the next 6 months. Or, If your IRA is worth less than $250,000 then you might not benefit from this workshop. How do you get qualified, targeted leads to your seminars? Once you have aligned your value proposition with your target market you are well on your way. The next task is to rent space in the mind of your target audience through drip marketing. Drip marketing is extremely effective because you send promotional pieces with clear, constant and consistent marketing messages to a targeted group over a period of time. The group begins to identify you through the pieces and you become like a jingle they just cant get out of their heads. Once youre on their mind and they make contact, you simply have to follow through with your value proposition. As you send out your promotional pieces consider putting a schedule of your seminars in them, so theres plenty of opportunities for people to make it to your presentation. The more opportunities you give them to hear what you have to offer, the better your chances of getting them to your presentation. You can market your seminars through the promotional pieces to catch your target groups attention and drive them to your event. However, the copy in these pieces must not only have the aforementioned qualifiers, but must be fresh, engaging and professional. You must communicate quickly and often how you can earn or save them more money. If you are looking for more training and education on seminar marketing then go to BuildYourMarket.com and look under the market tab. You will find highly-detailed, easy-to-use marketing strategies to build out your brand, capture market share and reach financial independence. Does your CRM just lay there? Ness Notes (July 24)
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Larry_Ness]Larry Ness Are you ready for some football? Most NFL teams are in camp and the start of the season is about seven weeks away. The NFL's preseason begins with the Hall of Fame Game from Canton on Sunday August 6. NBC, back in the business of covering the NFL, will air the game between Oakland and Philadelphia at 8:00 ET. Week 1 of the preseason starts on Thursday night, August 10. My free play for Monday is on the Oak A's over the Bos Red Sox. After a 2-0 Sunday sweep (including a LEGEND win on the White Sox to up that record to a perfect 4-0 this year!), I'm on a nice mini-run of 8-4 since Wednesday, despite an 0-3 Friday. I've got two plays for Monday, another exclusive Las Vegas Insider (25-12 since May 1) and my 15* Situational Game of the Month. The 2006 season opens on Thursday September 7, as the defending champs (the Steelers for those of you with short memories) host the Miami Dolphins (8:30 ET). NBC will carry this game as well and the network begins it's Sunday night coverage on the 10th, with a Manning vs Manning matchup. Peyton and the Colts will visit Eli and the Giants at 8:15 ET. ESPN takes over for ABC on Monday nights this year and opens with a Monday night doubleheader. The Vikings visit Washington to play the Redskins at 7:00 ET and the Chargers will be in Oakland to take on the Raiders at 10:15 ET. Regular Monday night games will start at 8:30 ET this year with ESPN dedicating almost all of its Monday programming as a day-long pre-game show. Even the NFL Network joins the game coverage this year. The fledgling network will carry its first-ever live game on Thanksgiving night (November 23), after the traditional Detroit and Dallas home games air. The Dolphins will visit the Lions at 12:30 ET and the Bucs are in Dallas to play the Cowboys at 4:15 ET. Then, the NFL Network will carry one of the AFC's (and the AFL's before that) great rivalries at 8:00 ET, as the Denver Broncos visit the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, if they could only get Darryl Lamonica and Len Dawson to due the broadcast! Christmas Day is a Monday this year and ESPN will air another doubleheader. The Eagles visit the Cowboys (a present for T.O.) at 5:00 ET and then the Jets are in Miami at 8:30 ET. Week 17, the season's final week, will conclude with a yet to be determined game on NBC at 8:15 ET on New Year's Eve. MLB notes Minnesota and Tampa Bay each owned seven-game streaks entering the weekend. The Twins' seven-game streak was MLB's longest active winning streak, while the D'Rays' seven-game streak represented MLB's longest active losing streak. Minnesota extended its winning streak to eight with a Friday night win but lost 11-0 on Saturday in Cleveland, as Jeremy Sowers pitched a four-hit shutout (Twins had had at least 11 hits in each of the eight wins!). Speaking of hits, the D'Rays pounded out 15 hits in a 14-7 win on Friday over the Orioles, to end their seven-game losing streak. They then beat the Orioles 13-12 on Saturday, as the teams combined to collect 39 hits. The D'Rays scored 10 runs in the fifth and the Orioles had a nine-run seventh. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time two teams scored nine or more runs in an inning in the same game was June 3, 1933, when the New York Yankees scored 10 in one inning and the Philadelphia Athletics scored 11. Sunday, the teams combined for just six runs, as Baltimore's Erik Bedard won his seventh straight game, 4-2. With Minnesota's winning streak ending, the Cards open the new week with MLB's longest active winning streak at four straight. The Cards are 8-2 since the break and have won 11 of their last 13, after dropping 13 of their previous 16 games before the turnaround. St Louis' three-game sweep of LA in Dodger Stadium gives the Dodgers MLB's longest active losing streak at five in a row. LA is 1-10 since the break, getting outscored 57-17! A-Rod collected his 2,00th career hit over the weekend and it happened to be his 450th career HR as well, making him the youngest player to reach that milestone (he turns 31 this Thursday). However, things are not going well for MLB's $250 million man! Things are going well for Jered Weaver, as with Sunday's 3-1 win at Kansas City, he became the first rookie to open his career with seven wins in seven starts since Fernando opened the 1981 season 8-0 for the Dodgers. Jered's big brother Jeff had a good weekend as well. After a horrible effort in his St Louis debut last Monday, Jeff last 5.2 innings while allowing just six hits and one ER in a 6-1 win over the Dodgers Saturday night. Weaver's doppelganger, Sidney Ponson (see last week's notes), was up to his old tricks. He got just seven outs for the Yankees on Sunday (five on strikeouts!), while allowing six ERs in a 13-5 loss in Toronto. Ponson hasn't won in nine starts. Monday's schedule features 11 games with ESPN airing the Yankees at the Rangers (7:05 ET). However, no game is bigger than the first game of a three-game series between the Twins and the White Sox (in Chicago at 8:05 ET). The White Sox stood at 36-22 on the morning of June 8 (a half-game back of the Tigers), while the Twins were a season-worst eight games under .500 at 25-33. Since then, the White Sox have gone a respectable 23-16 but the Twins have gone 31-8 (inclues two separate eight-game winning streaks plus an 11-game streak). Now, the White Sox find themselves a season-high 6 1/2 games behind Detroit and Minnesota just three games behind them. Tonight's pitching matchup features Brad Radke vs Javier Vazquez. Radke is 4-0 with a 2.66 ERA over his last nine starts (Twins are 8-1) but offers a terrible away/home dichotomy. While his home ERA is 3.68 (team is 9-2 in his 11 starts), his road ERA is 6.52 (team is 2-7). Meanwhile, while Vazquez's ERA stinks on both the road (5.17) and at home (5.37), the White Sox are 4-5 in his road starts but 7-2 in his home starts. Also of note is Maddux vs Trachsel when the Cubs visit the Mets at 7:10. While Maddux (a future Hall of Famer) is 2-11 with a 6.23 ERA over his last 15 starts, journeyman Trachsel hasn't lost since May 17 (an 11-start stretch in which the Mets have gone 9-2), posting seven straight wins! My closing thought steps in the golfing world. Is it just me? How come I keep hearing everyone refering to a "Big-Five" on the PGA Tour? In alphabetical order, it refers to Ernie Els, Reief Goosen, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods. Not being all that smart, I am able to count. If one were to add up the career majors for Els, Goosen, Mickelson and Singh, you'd get 11. That's strange, because Tiger now owns 11 all by himself! Ness Notes is available Monday through Friday by 1:00 ET. Larry Ness is a documented member of the Professional Handicappers League.
